The first poem below was the first item ever at the WordPress version of The Jeffersonian, first published on this date in 2009. The title was Carthage Christening.

Have you heard of a college named Carthage?
It has beards, bona fides, and bundles of baggage.
I begged for backers, for a time,
Alas, secured few in that line,
Just groupies, grandees, gorgons and rubbage.

Or:

Have you heard of a college named Carthage?
It has beards, bona fides, and bundles of baggage.
I begged for backers, for a time,
Alas, secured few in that line,
Just groupies, grandees, gorgons and garbage.

Or:

Have you heard of a college called Carthage?
It has beards, bona fides and breakable baggage.
I begged for backers, for a time,
Alas, secured few in that line,
Just grandees and groupies, peers and plumage.

Which version do you like better?
